Many students are plagued by inability to understand what they read. Some have problem of not retaining what is read. A major reason for these experiences is lack of proper personal reading techniques by these folks. I would not advise anyone to imitate reading patterns because every person has unique ways of appreciating knowledge/ information. Yet I must say that there are strategies that would guide you while develop your own reading style. Consider these strategies: from the acronym:
BE – FOCUS – CAP
B -Broad Mind: Be willing to accept other people’s opinion and be ready to open your mind and learn new ideas and to receive information. Appreciate knowledge.
E -Enthusiasm: Be determined/ enthusiastic to grab information. An enthusiastic mind is a fertile ground for knowledge.
F -Friendship: Make friends with people that are thirsty for knowledge. Cultivate the spirit of being friendly with books and people that love books.
O -Occupy: Discipline yourself by occupying your mind with the thoughts of what you read. Whatever you cloud your mind with, takes hold of your life.
C -Consult/Compare: Get related works/books, make comparison. Make research to develop and gather more information about what you read.
U -Underline: Underline salient Points. Mark out important and unfamiliar words and find out their meanings. This can help you increase the stock of your vocabularies for better understanding.
S -Summarize: Summarize what you read in an abridged form. Make notes (in summary) while you read in order to have complete knowledge of it.
C -Cogitate (think): Employ the services of your brain and your mind by meditating on whatever you read. This will make the ideas to be part of you.
A -Ask Questions: Be inquisitive: Make enquires about issues you are not familiar nor clear with. Develop the spirit of curiosity.
P -Plan/Practice: Plan the time that is most suitable for you to read, whether night or day. Plan the place and position that suits your body. Practice what you read repeatedly in order to make it part of your life.
Remember; when you are taught, you learn.
When you read, you know but
When you study, you become.
